The Complete Guide to Denture Care: Longevity and Oral Health
Proper denture care isn't just about keeping your smile bright; it’s about protecting your gums and preventing infections like oral thrush. Whether you have full or partial dentures, following a consistent routine is essential.

1. Daily Cleaning Routine
Think of your dentures like natural teeth—they require daily attention to remove plaque and food particles.
Rinse after eating: Run your dentures under water after meals to dislodge loose debris.
Brush daily: Use a soft-bristle brush specifically designed for dentures. Avoid regular toothpaste, as it is often too abrasive and can create microscopic scratches where bacteria hide.
Use a denture cleaner: Use non-abrasive denture cleansers or mild dish soap.
2. Overnight Care (The "Soak")
Most dentures need to remain moist to keep their shape. Leaving them out overnight also gives your gum tissues a much-needed rest.
Soak in solution: Place dentures in a glass of water or a mild denture-soaking solution overnight.
Avoid hot water: Never use boiling or very hot water, as this can warp the acrylic, causing the dentures to no longer fit properly.
Rinse before wearing: Always rinse your dentures thoroughly in the morning to remove any chemicals from the soaking solution before placing them in your mouth.
3. Maintaining Your Oral Health
Even if you have no natural teeth remaining, your mouth still needs care.
Clean your gums and tongue: Use a soft toothbrush or a damp washcloth to wipe your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth every morning. This stimulates circulation and removes plaque.
Monitor for changes: If your dentures feel loose or cause sores, do not try to adjust them yourself. See your dentist immediately.
4. What to Avoid
To prevent damage and staining, keep these "don'ts" in mind:
When to See a Professional
You should visit your dentist at least once a year for a "denture check-up." Over time, the bone in your jaw naturally shrinks (resorption), which can lead to a loose fit. A professional reline can restore the suction and comfort of your appliance.
