Partial Dentures on Implants

Founding Denturists: Erin Derraugh and Wade Klimpke

Implant-supported dentures or fixed implant bridges

Partial dentures on implants, also known as implant-supported dentures or fixed implant bridges, are a great way to restore your smile’s health and appearance.

Because missing 1 or 2 teeth can dramatically affect your appearance and dental health, missing teeth should be replaced as soon as possible. Much like partial dentures, partial dentures on implants provide another option for restoring your natural smile.

About Partial Dentures on Implants

What are Partial Dentures on Implants?

Dental implants are surgically installed artificial teeth that replace one or more missing or extracted teeth. Dental implants are an excellent choice when you want a secure, fully functional replacement tooth.

Unlike partial dentures, partial dentures on implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone and do not require adjacent teeth for support.

However, implants can only be done if there is enough bone tissue to support the implant. If there is, our denturists will insert an abutment, or post, directly into your jawbone, which will act as the foundation or root between the implant and new artificial teeth. If you do not have enough bone tissue to support an implant, bone grafting may be done to accommodate dental implants. Please talk to us about your options.

Your newly created partial dentures are then attached to the abutment and fitted, so it is comfortable and stable.

Two Types: Removable or Fixed

There are two types of partial dentures on implants: ones you can remove and ones you cannot.

  • Removable: Removable partial dentures on implants, also known as snap-in overdentures, are secured to abutments, or posts placed in the jawbone. While still a very secure option, they snap in and therefore can be removed while sleeping and for cleaning and storing purposes.
  • Fixed: Partial dentures on implants, can also be fixed or non-removable. Once the abutments are in place, the false teeth, or crowns, are cemented or screwed to the implants. These can only be removed by your dentist or denturist.

Partial Dentures on Implants v. Partial Dentures

Although both are a fantastic solution for tooth replacement, partial dentures and partial dentures on implants differ in the following ways:
Can be removed
Best used for one or more missing teeth
Requires support from adjacent teeth
Requires sufficient bone volume
Easier to clean
Cost
Works with jawbone to maintain bone volume and facial structure
More Secure

Partial Dentures on Implants: Our Process

1

Consultation

Before implants are considered, our denturists will thoroughly examine your teeth and jaw and take x-rays to determine if you have enough bone tissue to support the implant. From there, we will discuss the entire procedure with you, what you can expect, the average healing time, and care instructions. We will also address any questions or concerns you may have so you are fully prepared and comfortable with the procedure.

2

Dental Implant Surgery

A small post (or abutment) is placed into the jawbone. This post will essentially become a solid part of your anatomy after it fuses and anchors to your jaw, which can take up to 3 months. In the meantime, we will fit you with a temporary solution so you aren’t without teeth during this healing period. Once you are fully healed and the post is stable, we will affix your permanent partial denture.

3

Colour & Shape

Using your existing teeth as a guide, we will select the shape and colour of your partial denture so it matches your natural teeth as closely as possible.

4

Construction

Using your dental impressions, moulds, measurements, and colour and shape selections, our in-house laboratory will customize your partial denture using the latest technologies.

5

Fittings

Once your partial dentures are crafted and you are fully healed, we will attach your partial denture to your inserted posts. We will adjust and align as needed to ensure the most natural and comfortable fit.

6

Care & Cleaning

Once your partial dentures are fit, and you are fully satisfied, we will discuss care and cleaning. Partial dentures on implants, like natural teeth, require daily brushing and flossing to prevent a build-up of stains and tartar.

Most Popular Treatments

We offer many payment plans and options that make your treatment quite affordable at low monthly rates. If your credit score is average or even slightly below, we can help you apply online with a third-party financing company, and you’ll receive an instant decision in most cases. This pre-qualifying approach is a “soft” credit check. If you don’t qualify, some patients tap a friend, family member, or spouse to co-sign with them for financing. Other alternative options may also be available to you.

At MyBite, our FREE consultation is a conversation, not a commitment.
