About Denture Care & Repair

Why Denture Care?

Poor dental care while wearing complete or partial dentures can lead to many problems, including:

  • Higher denture repair costs
  • Plaque buildup and tooth decay
  • Increased risk of gum disease
  • Further tooth loss
  • Discomfort and soreness

Denture Care

Just like natural teeth, regular care and frequent visits to your denture clinic are crucial for keeping your dentures in good shape and protecting your oral health. We recommend the following care & cleaning tips:

  • Cleaning & Brushing: Your dentures require daily cleaning to prevent the buildup of stains, tartar, and bacteria.

Brush your dentures daily using warm water, a soft toothbrush or special denture brush, and mild soap or denture paste. We recommend never using regular toothpaste on your dentures as it is typically too abrasive and may scratch the surface. You should rinse your dentures after every meal to remove food particles to keep your mouth as clean as possible.

  • Rinsing & Soaking: Your dentures should be taken out every night and stored in warm water or a special denture solution. Never store your denture in hot or boiling water as this can cause them to warp.

Not only will removing and storing your denture help retain its shape, but it also gives your mouth and gums and jaw a chance to relax and recuperate from the pressure of your dental appliance.

  • Professional Dental Care: Booking semi-annual appointments with us will ensure your dentures stay as comfortable as possible and continue to meet your needs. Depending on your relationship between your mouth and denture appliance, your dentures may need to be readjusted or relined over time.

What to Avoid

To keep your dentures looking and feeling their best, please avoid the following:

  • Regular toothpaste. We recommend not using traditional toothpaste, or whitening toothpastes, as these products can be too abrasive for denture material.
  • Hot water. When rinsing, avoid using hot water as it can warp and alter the shape of your dentures.
  • Abrasive materials and hard bristled toothbrushes. Never use abrasive toothpaste or hard-bristle brushes to clean your dentures. This could cause permanent damage to the denture surface.
  • DIY repairs or adjustments. Never attempt to repair your denture yourself. You could cause further damage and permanently affect their fit.

Denture Repair

Over time, you may find that the fit of your denture changes slightly. When this happens, it is crucial that you schedule an appointment with us. We will thoroughly check the state of your denture, along with the condition of your teeth and gums, to properly get your smile back on track.

The 3 most common denture repairs typically include denture relines, denture rebases, and sore spots.

DENTURE RELINE

A reline is an adjustment made to improve the fit of your dentures and is usually required every 5-10 years to keep your dentures comfortable and your mouth healthy. A reline helps tighten the grip between your dentures and your oral tissues so that you can more confidently bite, talk, and smile.

A denture reline typically requires a resurfacing of the area of the denture that is in direct contact with your tissue. The relining procedure helps to fill any gaps that may have emerged over time due to a normal shift or shrinkage in mouth shape, bone structure, or gum tissue.

DENTURE REBASE

If the gum portion of your denture is worn and cracked, but the teeth are in good shape, a rebase may be required. Denture rebase is similar to a reline, but a rebase replaces the whole pink-acrylic denture base material. This repair is often necessary when denture teeth become damaged or broken, and the strength of the dentures becomes compromised.

SORE SPOTS

Sore spots under your dentures can be caused by several things.

As the shape of your mouth changes over time, your denture alignment may become altered and no longer fit properly against your gums. This can cause areas of pressure that create sore spots on the soft tissues of your mouth. Over time, your dentures may also become too large for your gums or your bite may shift, creating an uncomfortable pressure spot on the gumline.

Most Popular Treatments

We offer many payment plans and options that make your treatment quite affordable at low monthly rates. If your credit score is average or even slightly below, we can help you apply online with a third-party financing company, and you’ll receive an instant decision in most cases. This pre-qualifying approach is a “soft” credit check. If you don’t qualify, some patients tap a friend, family member, or spouse to co-sign with them for financing. Other alternative options may also be available to you.

At MyBite, our FREE consultation is a conversation, not a commitment.
