What are Complete Dentures?

Complete dentures, also known as full dentures, are a full set of removable, artificial teeth and gums that replace lost or extracted natural teeth.

Separate from partial dentures, which replace only a few missing teeth, complete dentures are a complete top or bottom teeth replacement solution.

Complete dentures are custom-moulded to fit your gum line and the bone ridges in your mouth. They are typically affixed in place via natural suction, however, a dental adhesive may also be used to keep your dentures secure.

Benefits of Complete Dentures

Benefits of a complete denture teeth restoration solution include:

  • They provide a complete, even smile
  • Your ability to talk and chew is improved
  • They support your facial structure for a more youthful appearance
  • You can enjoy more of the food you love
  • They eliminate troublesome, damaged teeth

Our Complete Denture Package Options

Whatever your needs, budget, and lifestyle, we have several complete denture packages to choose from:

Our standard economy denture is our most affordable option and, therefore, the most cost-effective way to obtain full dentures. Although more economical, these dentures are still made of high-quality materials and processed according to the MyBite standard of excellence.

Our complex premium complete dentures are specifically designed to fit an active lifestyle. Our signature premium fit affords enhanced comfort and stability, along with a natural appearance.

This package offers an extraordinarily natural appearance and is the highest quality of complete denture we offer. Using state-of-the-art technology, each false tooth is triple-layered to create a “portrait quality” look. Gum lines are custom tinted to seamlessly match your mouth and smile. The denture also offers the highest level of impact, wear, and stain resistance with an array of custom professional upgrades.

Two Types of Complete Dentures

At MyBite, we create and fit two types of complete dentures: immediate and conventional.

Immediate Dentures

If you are having teeth extracted, your gums must heal before your permanent set of dentures – called conventional dentures – can be fitted. This is where immediate dentures come in: they are fitted immediately – bridging the time gap between tooth removal and permanent dentures so you aren’t without teeth for an extended period of time.

Before your natural teeth are removed, our denturists will create custom moulds of your mouth to design and create your immediate dentures. As soon as your teeth are removed, the immediate dentures are fitted.

Depending on healing time, you may wear your immediate dentures for up to 8-12 weeks before you graduate to your conventional or permanent dentures.

Conventional Dentures

Conventional dentures are your permanent set of custom dentures. After your natural teeth have been extracted and your jawbone and gums have healed, impressions of your mouth are made. Your conventional dentures are then designed and crafted from these impressions to ensure a perfect fit.

Complete Dentures: Our Process

Consultation

The complete denture process begins with a thorough examination of your mouth and an in-depth discussion of your dental needs. This includes reviewing our package options and our entire process in detail, so you know what to expect from your new, complete dentures.

Dental Impressions

We will then take full dental impressions and bite moulds of your mouth to create a fitted denture tailored to you.

Colouring & Shape

We will review colouring samples and shape options to determine the most natural look for you.

Wax Models

While our denture laboratory is creating your dentures, we will show you a wax model of what your final, complete dentures will look like. This gives you a visual of what you can expect to avoid any surprises.

Fittings

Once your dentures are completed, we will fit them to your mouth, making all proper adjustments, so your dentures fit perfectly, and your bite alignment is intact. This will help ensure your dentures are secure and comfortable.

Care & Cleaning

To prevent a buildup of stains, tartar, and food debris, dentures – like natural teeth – should be cleaned daily. We will discuss both brushing and soaking techniques and ongoing maintenance and care.

Complete Dentures: FAQs

A: While it depends on the type of denture package you choose, most dentures last anywhere from 5-8 years. The need for new dentures depends on wear and tear as well as how much your bone and gum ridges change shape or shrink over time.

A: Your dentures will require adjustments at some point. How often your complete denture will require adjustments depends mainly on how much your bone and gum ridges recede or shrink over the years. On average, you may require a reline or rebase adjustment once every few years.

A: It typically takes a few weeks for new denture wearers to get fully comfortable. In the beginning, the mouth must become accustomed to them, and there could be some initial discomfort. We will work with you to make all necessary adjustments to ensure your dentures are working to your full satisfaction.

A: At first, speaking with your dentures may be challenging. You may find speech is difficult, and your speech is somewhat altered. However, within a few weeks, your mouth will become accustomed to the denture, and your speech will return to normal.

A: We recommend eating soft foods, such as soup or mashed potatoes, for a few days after your dentures are fitted. Try eating more solid food as it becomes comfortable to chew. This could take up to 2-5 days.

A: We recommend taking your dentures out when you sleep to give your gums time to rest.
